Here's an update to my custom Nendoroid of Sabrina from Pokémon. I was busy for a few months so I didn't really get to work on her. I got some polyester putty a while back and I used that to smooth out the front of her dress. But it didn't really work as planned. I found it's grainy when you sand it and it's very difficult to get a smooth surface. It's bumpy and it chips easily. It's a lot of one step forward, two steps back. Sanding and replastering.
So I bit the bullet and scraped it all off. I was shocked by how easily it came off in large flakes. So I got out my trusty milliput and rolled a very flat sheet to paste on her front and back. It's funny, I didn't think I could achieve this originally and that's why I thought poly putty would be just the ticket. But while milliput is tricky to apply, it sets hard like a stone and it's very easy to whittle and sculpt with a knife. Sanding it afterwards is a doddle.
So anyway the next step is to figure out how to carve some gentle seams into her dress, like in the ref. Any suggestions?
On a spare piece of milliput I tried carefully cutting a shallow line and then using a fat needle to score it to the right depth. Dunno if that's a shitty approach though.
