>>8383241Some people call it "black basing," when you prime your aircraft in basically a black "pre-shade" over the entire surface, and then taking your primary lighter colored paint, such as a light grey or whatever, slowly build up the paint by spraying with a fine tipped needle, very close to the model, moving the airbrush around randomly as you let the paint build up. It leaves the aircraft with a nice textured look, here's a tutorial you can read more about it here:
Basically for my ship I'm using a similar method, just not with a black base. I painted a flat primary color and am just changing the tone using various lighter and darker shades of the same color, it seems to be working out really well.

Black basing is probably best used for lighter colors only though, for darker colors or camouflage you can modulate this method by using a variety of colors inside each aircraft panel, for example a yellow base to compliment a green camouflage, with black pre-shading of the panel lines. You just spray slowly and carefully to let the pre-shading and base color peak through the upper layer.
