Beast Machines happened right after Transmetal 2s and aince day one they had freaky biomechanical Guyver like designs under their animal skin. Especially if you've ever seen the card art.
But to be fair the toys werent as good and tastes vary. But I still I love some of the maximal designs and toys. I own a few of the Universe and RID repaints of BM toys and I love the ones I have a lot. It helps that the toys were so different from the show because they couldnt be assed to even try to make it show accurate, so its easy to seperate the toys from the awful show. I love weird ass biomechanical stuff.
