How I collect toys without being consumed by the perpetual void;
Step 1: Quantise your collection and purge
>Remove all toys from their current display/storage and lay them out in a single spot. If you have disorganised accessories and parts sort them into ziplock bags and label them now. Get an idea of the extent of your obsession it will motivate you to purge later
>Organise your displays real estate. Clean it down, decide on a hard limit, put in some lights if you havent already and get a stack of risers/claw stands
>Start segregating items based on best and worst. Move your best items into your display until capacity is hit.
>The remaining items should be sold off. If you absolutely have to use an extra box to store things you're on the fence about.
Step 2: Maintaining order
>Your collection is now more refined and quarantined to an acceptable area but now you have to deal with the root of the issue
>Manifest your pre-orders, (everyone should do this) print the receipts/pictures of the item, make a spreadsheet, write it out by hand in a book. You need to visualise the toys that are on their way; track outstanding amounts, basic release windows, and total paid/unpaid pre-order value. This will help hugely
>Set aside money each month, I put it in a mojo account, use it for all selfish purchases including toys (this will help prioritise spending overall, less money on other bullshit is money for toys now). make new purchases on a one in one out basis. To make room for a new purchase the weakest link in your collection should be sold. If you decide you're going to collect a new line, consider selling off the entirety of an old one if completionism is an issue.
>Be opportunistic and discerning with items you buy and use alert lists on places like Mandarake
>if you buy vintage, consider getting into restoring poor condition items over sourcing a mint version.
