Anyway to answer your question, I'm in the midwestern US, most of my Lego is in a nice dry basement, out of sunlight, no extreme temps. I really think it's a quality control issue.
From my mid-80s sets I've got exactly one cracked torso, and from the modern stuff, several. Including one that was already broken when it came out of the box.
