>>7994801 says, diffusion (the white cloth trick) is important. Doesn't necessarily need to be white cloth, it just needs to be something semi-translucent that will cover the bulb. Basically a lampshade. It will make the light much less harsh and give you a nice glow instead, and you'll stop getting those direct shining highlights like you can see on her leg and hair. This is the key to soft professional looking lighting.
You may also want to get a better background. If you want to stick with black, you can look into fabrics that absorb light like black velvet. That will avoid a visible spotlight effect on your background. Also, draping the cloth from above (like in this pic) gives the impression of an infinite background, with no visible seam where it meets the floor.
