The 1982 was referred to as the "8 back" becausr the cross sell featured the 8 figures that kicked off the line
Then when the second assortment hit, it became the "12 back", where the cross sell included a mix of first and second year figures.
Basically the 12 back figures are what a lot of people consider the "core" cast of MotU (if they're not cartoon fans)
