I agree with your viewpoint about the mysticism of the island of Mata Nui, but if LEGO had to follow-up the defeat of Makuta, a prequel was their best option. And that's why Metru Nui worked for me. It expanded existing characters and explained the backstory of the matoran and the turaga (as well as their life cycle). Makuta was still the main villain, and the sets themselves weren't that far off from the original technic inspiration. 2006 onwards is when Bionicle became a different beast entirely. I like some stories after Metru Nui, such as 2007 and 2008, but the rest clashes heavily with everything preceding it.
