The short version is a squad of Spartans were sent in to check out a penitentiary that had been overrun by the Covenant during a failed invasion. They found a single survivor, a battered and tattered prisoner surrounded by piles of dead Grunts, Jackals and Elites. Rather than see the man re-incarcerated the Spartan squad reported there were no survivors, quasi-conscripted him into the Marines and arranged to have him permanently attached to their unit, which then adopted the color orange as a tribute to his epic last stand.
