Another thing for me is that the flaws I have with Afterlife could easily be fixed with a bit of tweaked writing or rearranging scenes. Like there's no reason Ray wouldn't believe Egon in my mind. Replace it with Egon moving out there and having the guys stay behind to make sure no other spooks show up while he's gone. He tells them not to tell his family where he is because it'd be too dangerous to get involved and that he'd call them all if things really hit the fan. His wand set up works in keeping things back and has no need to call until the night we see at the beginning and dies. Have ghost Egon play chess with Phoebe, bring her to his lab, fix the pack, then the trap. Terror Dog escapes and when it goes back to the temple it lets out Muncher. Phoebe wants to get back the creature they let out so it doesn't cause trouble and she believes it to be Muncher. They catch him and get sent to prison. Ray avoids answering her questions because Egon said not to mention anything, until she says Egon died. Before Ray can say anything she's cut off by the cop. Ray with a sad look hangs up, thinks, picks up the phone again then fade to next scene. When they get home Egon leads Phoebe to his notes about what's going on and they realize it wasn't Muncher that escaped. Things play out the same but Shandor takes over Gozers role because it's failed once already. We now get JK Simmons Shandor shenanigans. He gets to ham it up and every other major bit plays out the same. Ray explains afterward that Egon told him to say nothing to keep them safe.
Sorry for the wall of text. Seems like it's a lot of issues there but to me the movie had the basic gist of a really good sequel that got mucked up by some writing and order of events. When I watched it all I saw was a fun movie trying to make fans happy.
