Most of my dolls are on Metal or wooden porcelain doll stands. I about 100 of them. Yes, they are kinda wide and unless you get lucky it wont grip onto your dolls waist perfectly, but it's also never going to allow our doll to fall, and she can stand. You just have to position her just right so she doesn't slant to one side more then the other.
Thrift stores that sell porcelain dolls usually have good quality metal stands attached to them. Maybe a few (100) of them can go home with you.
You can use Monster high , Ever After, Rainbow Hight, and OMG stands, and if you ever have to return a legit defective doll always remember that they usually don't know the doll came with a stand.
If you have dolls with long dresses that cover their feet like a Disney Princess you can literally use a Burger King or McDonlads cup as a stand. Most of my Disney Princess dolls are on those. The tall cups work the best.
