It's based off of H.G. Giger's works, and pretty much everything he made incorporated phalluses and/or vulvae, and had sexual overtones. His stuff was designed to simultaneously evoke fear, discomfort, and eroticism all at the same time.
Take a look at his original sculpture for the Xenomorph from the Alien movie; this has actually been made LESS erotic (and was modified further when it was made into a suit with a more monstrous mouth instead of female lips) - if you want to see how sexual the thing was originally supposed to look, Google Giger's two original paintings of the thing (Necronom IV and Necronom V).
