In fact, I don't think you're giving them enough credit--these are 100% original sculpts that for the most part manage to catch the same vibe as the old figures while adding more detail, which is a very difficult feat to begin with and one of my biggest fears when I first heard of the line. You're treating it as a given that they look "just like" the old toys--no bitch, that's an achievement.
Like others have mentioned, the paint on the figures themselves are more plentiful and varied, and they added sculpted detail in mostly non-intrusive ways (like the slime strings stretching between his figures, what a great little detail).
