I mostly start with a completely barebones "skeleton" of the model (in this case just putting the joints into a row with the arms added and the head being nothing more than two plates with a hinge) to get an overall idea and then add the other bricks to build around it.
After being mostly satisfied with the overall appearance I check what's left and try to use those parts as substitute for bricks that could be used somewhere else to flesh out the model even more.
