It's a very strange situation where the more casual fanbase on places like TFW was enjoying it, where as the more hardcore fanbase was waiting for it's downfall
Here's Willis bitching about the writing in DW just 3 months into the TF comic they were publishing. A lot of these guys has this - I think maybe because they worried it'd overshadow the Marvel comic that was precious to them? In this rant he's using this to deflect some of the criticisms of the crappier Marvel comics stories like Robot Master that got derided alot at the time.
A lot of the push for Marvel TF fiction came from Willis' clique- and it managed to be so influential we still see traces of that today.
