TF was a big challenge for western media back then due to the scale of the robots and the fact that every robot was shape shifting into a car/plane/camera so something had to give and that something was simplifying the design.
Most other Sunbow shows didn't suffer the scale issues and the two forms for every single character(usually it was one or none at all) so they were a lot more detailed and stayed closer to toy model.
