Just doing an absurd amount of really thin acrylic coats works, and isn't outrageously time consuming as they dry pretty fast, but of course it's not comparable with what you can get with an airbrush, mostly in terms of ease and somewhat in terms of result. A lot of patience can get you very close but overall a flat sheet of plastic will show all your slightest errors.
