The most expensive step in producing a figure nowadays is the painting. It’s the most time intensive step and requires the most quality control. Pic related is Motu Classics Rattlor. Mattel had to pay twice, once for yellow and once for blue, for each scale on this figure’s arms and legs. It was one of the most expensive Motu Classics to produce in the entire line.
Every figure in the line needs to come in under a certain price point. This is especially true for a mass retail line where the cost to the retailers can’t be adjusted per figure, it has to be the same across board.
