Bandai tends to also cut the shit out of the sculpt too, which can look just as bad. Mafex is alright. SAS depends on the character.

Since you weren't here before Hasbro started showing off their pinless figures, you'd know that people used to call Hasbro/NECA/etc cheap for not going pinless.
Other things people used to think were expensive just because imports used them: diecast parts, low res prints, rubber overlays, drop down hips, and who knows what else.

Like diecast, it's actually a cost cutting procedure, since it takes the place of spray masks and tampograph. Of course, unlike Bandai, Hasbro kept on using tampographs and spray masks in conjunction with the low res print.
