OP, you're going about this all wrong, attending the wrong cons and shit. You're for some reason trying to find great articulation in the indie/sofubi scene, where a lot of creators honestly don't give a shit about that--they care a lot more about their sculpts and paintjobs (cause they're largely one-person artist operations, not businesses!)
Try going to TFNation in Birmingham this year and check out some of the third party stuff. Those guys are dead serious about what they do and are pushing the articulation and engineering boundaries to the point where Hasbro is struggling to play catchup.
