Like just get a good knife, maybe even a dremel, and remove plastic until it comes out. Using some lubricant would make getting the parts in and out easier too.
You can be pretty rough doing this too, since on top of the plastic being really thick and bulky here, the side I cut up isn't even visible since it's completely covered by a panel.
