Even though it doesn't make much sense that they're not drone tanks, but conventional tanks manned by droids. I guess the in-universe explanation could be that they were designed for conventional militaries in mind, then the Trade Federation bought some, and stuck droids in them instead of mercenaries.
Now that I think about it more, I take it all back, humanoid battle droids are convenient that they could just sit in any milsurp manned vehicle as long as they're programmed for it, instead of having to nigger-rig everything into droids.
