Hell, most people mocked the Force Unleashed when it originally came out. I know I did. It just was DBZ power levels of goofy. No one liked Starkiller being literal god levels of power was cool or realistic.
I appreciate George Lucas letting people play in his sandbox (we did get some great stuff), but it really was just glorified fan fiction. I hated how people took the game so seriously, they viewed it as canon.
On the topic of George being a "control freak", I think most fans were just annoyed that we couldn't get an unedited OT, and how silly the Star Wars license was used (Star Wars Kinect). If only we knew how bad it would get when Disney took over.
