I'm more of a manga guy myself but Yuru Camp is one of those series that really benefitted from bring animated to help build its atmosphere.
There is a lot of good newer slice of life series, you just need to be willing to look for them through the sea of troupy harems (same goes for romance mangas, which I'm a fan of).
