If you ever paid attention to a comic (manga too), in the majority of panels the characters aren't looking straight ahead. It's almost always askew. Artists generally only draw characters staring straight ahead for action scenes or intense moments. Even then, they might have them looking forward but upward, with their heads pointing slightly down.
It's just more dramatic to have the eyes looking anywhere but straight.
Same shit with movies and tv. Even when they're speaking directly to someone, good actors are constantly moving their eyes. It's called AAAACTING.
Does that work with toys? It really depends on what you're trying to do.
Video games are more like toys in this respect, because the character models are almost always looking straight ahead. It's actually pretty creepy if you ever move the camera around when just standing still, which is why they include idle animations where the character starts looking around, blinking, and yawning animations.
Still, that staring straight ahead is what most of us want though, because neutral works for most incases, albeit not ideally.
It's akin to having the C-shape hand. It works as a fist, sword holding, cup holding, gun holding, etc etc etc. Not ideal, but it just works.
