Do you only read manga or only watch cartoons, where coloring is super simplistic or nonexistant? Video games?
Hell, even in black and white art, some comic artists are known for hatching and cross hatching (Neil Adams, Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee), which those washes simulate that sort of shading. Even Bruce Tim can look "dirty" when he uses paint
