>>6533930I happened to be throwing out a bunch of plastic spoons and thought I'd put a couple to use.
Anyway, the MGM "Magic Powder" and the other brands work something similar to rubbing graphite to get a sort of worn/gun metal look. Some people have said the stuff is graphite but I've tested the process with graphite and graphite needs more tooth in the surface and doesn't give off nearly as much of a chrome look. This powder also has a faint sulfur-like scent.
There's another manufacturer of the powder and, from what I've seen around on the net, it's just a little bit lighter. The Wave ""Kosutte Ginsan" isn't in production any longer supposedly though. I'm pretty sure the yellow-brown hue I'm getting has to do with the base color. I tried this stuff on a medium gray and got that same hue all over. Also putting a gloss coat over the top dulls the mirror effect. I suspect it might lift the pigment a little but I'm not sure. Two things to try at some point: Spraying with enough air time to dry the top coat slightly, and polishing the top coat with a fine polishing compound to see if the chrome finish will stay intact.
The stuff doesn't rub off that easy but will rub off some. I'm going to try using a UV cured coating in the next test when the stuff gets in, see if that works.
The Molotow pen looks like it gives a better finish than Alclad desu. If you try it out, please do post with pics.
