That statement was directed towards your idealism of anti-pandering and how it can't be good for it's inviting design, or "family friendly," not the belief of whether or not it looks good. (It's common for people to dislike it and completely miss the point of why it's so great, as a vicious design would not have worked for the ending)
Shin Godzilla's first form, a goofy, no armed, anime-eye-having design was affectionately named and took over Japan by storm, with people even cosplaying as him, so I guess you can't like this visceral take on Neo-Japan Nationalisms and bureaucracy either, because the first 20 minutes has pandering. : (
