How beefy are your locomotives? For any of the basic DC locos I've had, Bachmann's white square one with the phone plug worked well. I also had 80's / 90's vintage parts-bin TYCO transformers work fine, where the dial broke before anything else did.
Picrel was one of my favorites for a long time.
