Turns out I was wrong about Galvy not balancing on his treads. I was so completely wrong.
What it needs is to be sitting on a solid, flat surface, not on the slope of a couch cushion with a blanket over it.
It actually balances beautifully, although the ratchet positions really don't want it to point straight forward. Easy enough to fix if you adjust the torso slices on the sides instead of the shoulders.
