IDW dealt with this but made the character grating and insufferable, one of the micromaster two-things. I guess they'd usually be screwed unless one of them was conveniently a 4-wheeled vehicle or other.
So you'd have to make them half-assed triple-changers, of making them have feasible emergency standalone modes, something above the tier of "the guy who's the rear half of a horse costume"
