There's obviously the slew of people who were going to hate it for being IDW-based, and then the snobbish crowd that automatically turns up their noses at anything from the Prime Wars "cost-cutting" era without ankle tilts or wrist swivels. Then of course there were the people who overhyped it simply because it was the first attempt at a G1-style Magnus since the original, which is really crazy to think about, regardless.
But amidst all the fan discourse, it's actually just a super-fun, chunky robot with a transformation that proves just how gracefully simple Ultra Magnus can really be. Like, seriously, how did the SS version fuck it up so badly? Plus, even though this was at a point when prices were rising and plastic was waning, this guy is still way more bot than you get nowadays, and for less money. Everything's relative, I guess. Plus the partsforming hammer was pretty sick and a neat way to weasel a little something in that wasn't strictly G1-accurate. It's always amusing to see the things about toys that become more novel and unique as they age.
