He's an existing comic character and Super 7 kept his design quite faithful, aside from adding on stuff that was never shown (like what weapons he might use, or what he looks like without his helmet). The original comic never really went into detail about this stuff so it was a necessary evil in order to create accessories for the toy.
I don't have any nostalgia for Seargeant Bananas, so just on an aesthetic level, I much prefer this Cena-gorilla.
