Marvel's done various costumes for their characters that usually only use spandex and make those look good as well.
Also, its not that those materials don't exist IRL (in appearance), it's that real humans can't fill them out as good.

In Jim Lee's case, he's doing a tacticool design where the placement of the padding and armor's placement is visible by the stitching. It's basically what you're seeing done in the Marvel movies.
