>>6879045>>6879541>>6879947This so much, a lot of the companies producing media for the games at the time essentially just had a copy of the game to go by, maybe some promotional art, and had to figure out “How do we make a world/tell a story based on this 8-bit character blipping around the screen?” These properties were pretty new themselves and didn’t have much of a universe to go by aside from the story told in the games, so it was up to the writers to try and expand upon that and create content from it.
One of my favorite pieces of Mario media at the time was the Valiant comics series, and it had a lot of shit that was made up just for it, or was completely innacurate to modern continuity. But as a kid dying to learn more about these characters and have more adventures with them it was amazing to see all of these new stories being told, regardless if it was directly adhearing to the games.
Looking back, of course any of the precious media for these games seems silly because it’s so off from the established lore, but it was Wild West territory back then and when the lore wasn’t so defined that gave oppertunities to explore the characters in ways beyond the norm expected of them now.
