To get a good gloss without orange peel you need a wet coat across the entire surface (not just right where you're spraying *while* you're spraying there). I spray gloss at ~10psi from an inch or so away, works every time.
To get a *perfect* gloss coat you need 2 coats of clear: a dry (at ~20psi from a few inches away) followed by a wet (at ~10psi from an inch or so away), but you don't need to bother with that if the gloss is not the final finish, just the wet coat is enough.
