The fact that random cartoony designs are done for kid toys.
Comic toys based on specific comics? Collector toys for adults.
This is the perception that is pushed by the collector market.
The Marvel Legends line was pushed as a collectors line as well, hence being devoid of gimmicks and the realistic style they were all done in. They're not random kiddy toys, but offered as something of a definitive toyline, where all future characters would fit together with. So the toys from wave 1 would fit in with toys made 20 waves later.
It was designed as a long term toyline for collectors, one that was beyond just the style of one or two sculptors, hence the realistic style that most any sculptor was taught to do and pick up long after the older ones got fired/quit/retired.
Hasbro kinda fucked that up though, despite using the same sculptors, as their budgets sacrified paint, articulation, over reuse, and scale creep. But they're still following the same premise of the toyline.
So it shouldn't be surprising that people dislike Yamaguchi's design, as it's cartoony style is throwback from what adult collectors expect from their toylines.
It doesn't even follow the faithful authenticity like other companies offer either.
