Once you've done that, I think it makes track planning far easier especially as you can also physically place it onto the baseboard just to get an idea of how it'll actually look in practice. It might even be worth considering splitting it into smaller sections to build a modular layout so you could have a small area on each part of the wider layout devoted to what you have in mind and to help with storage/removal if that's likely to be a concern.
