I didn't have any problems with the ramp pieces being too thin, but I also wasn't a hamhanded kid. I at least appreciate that these designs had max playability in mind with no bullshit. If lego had their shit together, skateparks could be one of the many sub-genres of City to become a whole series in itself, even if it's only once or twice a year and still inside the City brand.
