They invite the press, give out a bunch of cool free shit, and they get a bunch of positive impressions from the press.
If it was digital only, you're at the mercy of places like /toy/ that shit over everything and anything.

Seriously, press events are the best. Free food, free drinks (alcohol even), a goodies bag full of NOT CHEAP stuff, and being able to talk with a bunch of cool people.
Only thing that really compares is something like the San Diego Comic Con, but the freebies aren't as high end or practical.
If YOU were to get something like this, it'd be hard to say anything negative about the company that gave it to you. The press, usually being higher profile than some random nerd on /toy/, will be tell hundreds of thousands to millions of other people. Plus, if they do say something bad, chances are they won't be invited to the next one, and miss out on the free food and cool free shit.
