This is obviously functional if you have a large collection of these little dudes, especially when the different exclusives and color options encourage you to collect. It also provides a uniform aesthetic that brings the entire line together despite a wide variety of different creatures and even licensed properties. Aside from all that I appreciate the design and creativity aspect that comes from the "Box" constraint. Designing an appealing animal form that can collapse into a small cube and they many different ways he's gone about achieving that are a big part of the fun. For instance they easily could of just made one big penguin for the Ice cube, but instead he made it 4 separate little penguins that magnetically huddle together to form one cube, achieving the design aesthetic while also bringing a bit of that animal's behavior to life as well.
I don't even collect or know much about Bakugan but that sounds wrong too since they're used for a tabletop game? Their transformed shape is designed to work with and for that game specifically. I guess you just want them to be cars or something? There are plenty of things like that out there already so I'm happy this is its own thing.
