Simple-to-maintain, common, and effective MS. Basically a downgraded, less modular version of the RX-78-2 Gundam. During the One Year War they made up the bulk of the Earth Federation's MS forces, but were only introduced about halfway into the war, before which the EF had made do with mostly conventional forces. A good match against the then-common Zaku II, and later the Dom and Rick Dom.
The GM line of Mobile Suits would go on for quite some time due to its effectiveness, though in animation GM type suits are shown jobbing 80-90% of the time.
