Remember that donkey kong was still a japanese intellectual property, so in spite of the game being handled by a western studio, it wasn't as if the branding was completely foreign to the general japanese gaming public. Even now days I feel like I see the games (they have neat japanese exclusive box art) in stores occasionally. Second hand stores, but their presence is still lingering.
