I personally absolutely tired of G1 crap and this gimmicky line is the only time when i finally enjoying transformers because it's something different and unique.
One of reasons i couldnt do it before is because TF community usually contained one of the most insufferable whiny shitheads that live in their mom basement and being super picky over toddler toys.
At least gimmicky lines filtered a lot of them and it was fun to be in a /toy/ hobby for a while.
