Before the 2000's, Transformers didn't really feel like the toyline had a "main character". Yeah Optimus and Megatron got a lot of toys, but rarely more than 2 a year. In terms of presentation, the big, prominent characters in the cartoon got the same treatment as the minor ones, and the non-show characters.
I'm glad Hasbro still does original box art for characters, bit even that seems less prominent even if they got more elaborate. Making it the alt-mode is kind of dull. Buying TF as a kid was a fun experience looking through the card art that made them come to life, and the tech specs that gave them something unique. this is just a $6 toy, but his art makes him look cool and his tech spec gives him a personality that helps spring imagination for play style.
