I ended up using a marvel legends female arm for the neck.
For paints I primer coated in grey, then did washes of purple/pink followed by another grey wash.
The eyes are yellow at the center and fade to orange/red toward the edges. As long as you thin your paints you should be able to get something nice and gritty.
