The keys will ensure the mold halves align and interlock properly and can't shift around.
Use Smooth-On mold release, or if you want to go cheap, heat some Vaseline (or generic petroleum jelly) with a hair dryer set on low, then brush it onto the mold faces (not in the parts cavities) to prevent the mold halves from sticking to each other.
