From my perspective, detolf looks like a cheap bachelor pad alternative for display- easy to buy, assemble, and move when your lease runs out.
While curios offer the design aspect when building a living room or display area.
They are typically heavy and grounded. Many have lock and key. They're great for families for this reason- won't fall over like cheap newer furniture and can be locked away from prying hands.
There is a huge variety as far as wood color or design, and they're really cheap on craigslist. Yeah- they're cheap because Grandma died and her family is giving away her shit- but it's a family heirloom I would gladly pick up. I do NOT think I would buy second-hand ikea shelves on craigslist.
It's funny some people on /toy are so creative but can't get creative with their displays. I think a painted black curio would look pretty cool.
