>>8040453I don't know about video game sprites, but lazy customs by lazy people look lazy, whereas a good custom or repaint is no different than a well detailed model kit/miniature or realistic movie prop. All the same rules apply when it comes to achieving good results and this in itself is an art. It takes patience, practice and skills not everyone has. Tweaking and customizing toys (when it makes sense, you shouldn't ruin high end masterpieces) is just the natural end game for any toy hobbyist with a creative mind. The whole thing is born from the desire to improve on mediocre efforts typically seen in mass produced stuff. It's probably the most fun you can get out of a toy hobby, especially now when sculpts are constantly getting more and more detailed but the paint is still lacking. Taking a cheap $20 tie-in merch/toy to the next level and achieving realism and visual parity with something seen on-screen like in a movie or a game is more titillating than porn. There is nothing else like it. Detailed dioramas (like what you'd see with model tanks and such) is the next step but not everyone has the time and energy for that. Customizing action figures is a different focus anyway, becuase you probably want to pose and photograph this stuff.
