Do you think Gundams, designed with classic aesthetics in mind, are designed with less moving parts than a Bayformer? Those parts are there, but hidden inside shells.
The only reason Bayformers look like that is because unlike gundams, they have to move those parts everytime they transform but, like gundams, they need more shit moving to redistribute their weight when moving.
Shit, look at large IRL machines and how they have a shitton of parts to redistribute weight in the form of caterpillar treads.
And if there's that trend of over-designed mecha is that new designers have no idea how to design a mecha. It's fucking stupid to make a mecha thought for armored warfare and give it exposed parts.
